Arctic Watch: Comprehensive Business Planning, 1999
Know: Consilium provided business planning assistance for preparation of a comprehensive plan for development and financing of Arctic Watch, a premier eco-tourism facility at Cunningham Inlet on Somerset Island, Nunavut.
Collaborate: The business planning team worked with Richard Weber and Josée Auclair of Canadian Arctic Holidays. Richard, a former Canadian cross-country ski champion, leader and participant in numerous Arctic expeditions, and the first to complete together with Mikhail Malakhov a round trip expedition to the North Pole without re-supply or support teams, and Josée, a former Canadian cross-country ski team member, had been operating commercial tours in the Arctic since 1993 and wished to establish a remote eco/adventure-tourism lodge in the Arctic Islands.
Connect: The Consilium business planning team brought together in-house expertise with the tourism experience of PanArctic Consulting and the architectural expertise of Full Circle Architecture to produce a dynamic, forward-looking business plan for purchase and development of a facility that had proved unsuccessful under previous owners.
Act: The team worked closely with Richard and Josée, assisting them through intensive market analysis and development of a broad client survey that served as the basis for preparation of a strong, multi-faceted marketing plan; human resource and operational planning to address critical staffing, training, and facilities requirements; and comprehensive financial analysis and planning to rigorously test viability and serve as the basis for implementation of a recommended financing package.
Succeed: The business plan that resulted from the combined knowledge and experience of the owners and the technical expertise of the planning team was successful in accessing required financing of close to half a million dollars, and in providing the marketing and development tools and plans to produce the desired viability and growth for Arctic Watch lodge.
